Dryer Maintenance Tips from the Pros:

PROBLEM:

Dryer heats but takes too long to dry clothes.

The most common cause for this problem is AIR FLOW.

Somewhere in the system the HOT AIR is being obstructed.

1. First, check the lint filter. Wash it in hot soapy water using a brush.

If water will not flow through the filter, neither will air.

2. Next, check the vent hose. This needs to be a 4” hose made of fire-proof material (the white vinyl is not fire-proof).  Is the dryer pushed all the way back against the wall?  If so, the flexible vent is probably smashed in causing an obstruction. The 4”diameter hose must stay “four inches in diameter,” so don’t kink it and don’t smash it. Vent lines need to be as short as possible. If there are 10 feet of exhaust hose snaked in behind the washer and dryer, it will take much longer to dry clothes and shorten the life of your dryer.

3. Now go outside and find the vent exhaust hood. It may be louvers rather than a hood. This MUST BE cleaned every six months. Lint will collect here and cause an obstruction.

4. More and more homes have the laundry room in the center of the house with the exhaust vent going up and out the roof. In a two-story house this could be a run equal to 30 feet.  Most dryers will push hot, wet air 10-12 feet with no problem but 35 feet up and out the roof cannot be done efficiently without a booster fan.

5.Have a chimney sweep clean your vent line every two years.

PROBLEM:

Dryer runs but does not heat.

If this is a gas dryer, there is no simple or easy fix.

If this is an electric dryer, go to the breaker box and locate the double breakers,( these are 2 switches fastened together).  Find the ones marked with a 30 or 40 on the switch. Turn these breakers OFF. Push HARD toward  off, and this will reset the switch. Now turn the breakers back ON. (If you know for sure which breaker goes to the dryer, then only reset that breaker. Otherwise, reset all breakers marked 30 or 40.)

You cannot always tell if a breaker is tripped just by looking. You must reset them to make sure they are ON.  Electric dryers need 220 volts to operate properly. The dryer will run on 110 volts, but will not heat. With a double breaker, one side can be off, “or tripped,” and the other side ON. If this is the case, then the motor will run but the heating element will not produce heat.

This situation is very common after a storm.
